CBD Oil for Pets – What Should You Know

CBD oil is ruling the roost in the wellness industry, as there have been a lot of studies to prove its benefits. Yes, human studies haven’t been conducted so far to justify the claims of this chemical compound; however, certain promising studies have been conducted on animals to make us believe that there is a bright future for the CBD industry across the globe.

Many pet owners are now considering the option of making CBD a regular part of their pets’ lives as well. If you are a pet owner, you will get some help from this article, as we address some of the basic facts you should know before giving CBD for pets.

What is CBD?

We are sure you definitely know what CBD is, if you have already thought of giving it for your pets. However, for those who are new to this field, here is a brief overview of CBD. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD or CBD oil, is one of the over 100 chemical compounds extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant. This is the plant that also releases another compound known as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

THC is banned in most countries because it makes a person feel high and intoxicated. However, CBD is totally different from THC. It doesn’t make you feel high and it doesn’t contain any psychoactive elements in it. It also contains many antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients that cure many ailments in humans and animals.

CBD for pets

CBD oil brings a lot of benefits to humans. It is known to reduce the effects of neuropathic pain, as it acts on the ECS of the human body. Similarly, dogs and cats can also get quite a lot of relief from pain and seizures, when you administer the right dosage of CBD to them. A study conducted by Cornell University has proved that CBD, when used in the right dosages, can help dogs to get relief from their pain due to osteoarthritis.

In this study, scientists conducted a study on dogs that had osteoarthritis and multiple joint pain. They were divided into two groups, with one group receiving CBD dosage every 12 hours, and the other group receiving a placebo trial. At the end of the study, the mobility, activity and blood tests of the two groups were checked again. Around 80% of the dogs that received the CBD drug showed a phenomenal improvement in their mobility when compared to the dogs that received the placebo trial.

Side effects and risks that you should be aware of

Like humans, dogs and cats should first undergo a health-assessment check to know which type and dosage of CBD would suit them the best. Ensure that your vet checks your pets first, before you start the CBD routine in their lives. Also, it is highly recommended that you always opt for small dosages first to know how they react, before increasing the dosage.

Initially, you may notice that your pets could feel dryness in their mouth when you start giving them CBD; however, this will fade off with time. In some cases, pets may also experience drowsiness and low BP levels, but they will recover after a while.
