There are several ADU guidelines that you need to be aware of when building in Los Angeles. Of these guidelines, the interior requirements are often overlooked at first. So, here’s a couple you should be aware of.
Not knowing the interior requirements of an ADU is a common mistake that can be easily avoided with a little research.
In Los Angeles, the bathroom in an ADU must be at least 30 square feet and contain the following amenities.
- Shower or tub
The kitchen of an ADU along with the hallways and closet, must be at least 50 square feet.
Bedroom/Living Room Requirements
The bedroom/ living room needs to be at least 70 square feet.
Helpful Interior Design Tips
To meet these requirements, you may find yourself with limited space for other things such as storage or a laundry room. Here are a few tips to help you make those tough decisions about what needs to be in your ADU.
Always Plan for Storage
Finding the perfect balance between too much and not enough storage is crucial. The last thing you want is for the ADU tenants to not be able to comfortably live within it because there are not enough locations for their belongings.
You should have storage throughout the entirety of your ADU, not just in one area. Due to this, you may have to make tough decisions, like if you really need a walk-in closet in the master bedroom or if your living room really needs to be as big as it is.
Always Plan for A Laundry Area
Never compromise on space by removing laundry machines. Even if you can’t devote an entire room or closet to a washer or dryer, you should at least plan for a two in one machine that can fit in the kitchen under the counter.
Not having a place to do laundry is a major complaint that ends up having to be addressed late, costing you more money. To avoid this, just plan for it from the start.
